University of Pennsylvania President Liz Magill announced Saturday she is stepping down after facing intense blowback to her testimony at a congressional hearing focused on college leaders’ responses to campus unrest from the Israel-Hamas war.

Magill faced bipartisan backlash for evading a question from Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.), who asked whether pro-Palestinian student protesters’ calls for “intifada” or “the genocide of Jews” violate the university’s codes of conduct on bullying or harassment.

Magill responded: “If the speech turns into conduct, it can be harassment.”
