State Attorney General Eric Schmitt won Missouri’s Republican Senate primary on Tuesday, beating out other contenders in the state’s crowded battle to replace retiring GOP Sen. Roy Blunt.
Schmitt came out on top in the high-stakes race against competitors including Rep. Vicky Harzler and former Gov. Eric Greitens, who resigned from office in scandal in 2018. Greitens, who led heavily divided polls of the crowded primaries for month, saw his standing fall amid an ad campaign featuring new allegations from his ex-wife of domestic and child abuse.
Amid Greitens’ slide, Schmitt rose to first in recent polling. His victory is a relief for party leaders, as a potential Greitens nomination had sparked concerns about holding a seat that has been in Republican control since 1987.
