The Senate overwhelmingly approved Gen. Randy George to be the Army’s top officer Thursday, the second of a trio of military officials to overcome Sen. Tommy Tuberville's blockade of senior Pentagon nominees.
George’s 96-1 confirmation vote comes one day after the Senate cleared Air Force Gen. C.Q. Brown to be the next Joint Chiefs chair. The upper chamber is slated to vote to confirm Gen. Eric Smith to lead the Marine Corps later Thursday.
But Democrats are not declaring victory yet. With 300 generals and admirals at the upper rungs of the armed forces still stranded, senators still have to find a way to maneuver around the Alabama Republican’s promotions hold, which is still in effect, in protest of the Pentagon’s abortion travel policy. Lawmakers have pledged to keep up public pressure on Tuberville to change course.
