President Joe Biden praised Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson’s opening statement before the Senate Judiciary Committee and requested “regular updates” on her confirmation hearing Tuesday, the White House said.
Biden “thought Judge Jackson’s opening statement was strong, forceful, and effective,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki wrote in a tweet — referring to Jackson’s prepared remarks delivered Monday to lawmakers on the panel.
“Today, he has asked for regular updates on the status of the hearings,” Psaki added. Her tweet came as Jackson, a judge on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals and Biden’s first Supreme Court pick, faced her first round of questions from senators Tuesday morning.
In an initial back-and-forth with Senate Judiciary Char Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Jackson expanded on her judicial philosophy, saying she endeavors “to stay in my lane” when hearing cases.
Jackson also sought to deflect some Republican lines of attack — including misleading claims by Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) that she had been soft on sentencing child porn offenders.
